RNC News - RNC's response the plans outlined in the SEN Green Paper

RNC Principal, Sheila TallonWhy students with visual impairment (VI) need answers, and need them now...

A response to this week's report on the plans outlined in the Green Paper: Support and aspiration: A new approach to special educational needs and disability

"Students who are blind or partially sighted can have their lives transformed by being able to access the right kind of education at crucial points in their life and career. Which is why our college, and so many of the students who study here, will welcome the concept of increased choice in the reforms mapped out by Sarah Teather MP, Minister of State for Children and Families yesterday (May 15)," says Sheila Tallon, Principal at the Royal National College for the Blind (RNC).

"However, we still need to see that concept of choice linked to a mechanism that ensures this will actually become a reality. This mechanism is not yet clear. There is still so much to do to make sure that adults and young people who are blind or partially sighted are given the same opportunity as their sighted peers. The proposals today are a starting point, but we as a college will continue to fight to ensure every student is able to access the training and support they need so they can go on to fulfil their potential and live independent lives.

"There are still many questions that need to be answered, including what happens to students who this year have been unable to go to the college of their choice as a result of the current system? What happens to them next year if the college they are directed to is unable to meet their needs and so give them the confidence and life skills that will enable them to move forward and to enjoy a full life?"
